A Sea of Panels in the Sand
The Tengger Desert Solar Park in Ningxia covers vast stretches of desert with photovoltaic panels and at one point ranked as the largest single PV plant on Earth. China has since built even bigger plants, but Tengger remains a defining image of desert-scale solar.
Why the Desert Works
High solar irradiance, flat terrain, and low land value make deserts ideal for utility-scale PV — the same logic driving plants in Morocco, the UAE, and the southwestern US. China pairs them with grid links to coastal demand centers.
Restoring the Land
Some Chinese desert solar sites are now being combined with agriculture — planting crops beneath the panels, which shade the soil and cut evaporation. The Tengger region is a test of whether solar can simultaneously power a country and green its desert.
