Water Towers That Became an Icon
Completed in 1979 and designed by Danish architect Malene Bjørn with engineering by Sune Lindström, the Kuwait Towers are part of the city's water distribution system — enormous elevated reservoirs storing and pressurizing drinking water for the arid capital. The tallest of the three rises 187 meters.
The Famous Spheres
The two largest towers carry spheres sheathed in thousands of steel enamel tiles in eight colors, arranged to suggest Islamic mosaic from a distance. One sphere holds a restaurant and a viewing platform rotating over the Gulf.
A Symbol of the Nation
The towers were badly damaged in the 1990 invasion but repaired, and remain the instantly recognizable emblem of Kuwait — proof that even a piece of infrastructure, when designed with intention, can become a nation's identity.
